Schoolovision 2011: Hello from sLOVEnia

Our school is located in the heart of Cyprus, near the Troodos Mountains, in a village called Agros. It was built in 1930, but it was fully renovated in 1992 and now it is a modern building with a playing yard and a beautiful garden full of roses, as our village is famous for its roses. Our school has 53 students; all in primary age (6-11). We are looking forward to participating in the competition and listen to all European songs. Iceland are represented once again by Flataskoli Gardabaer which is situated not far from the capital of the island, Reykjavík.
Flataskoli is a primary school with 320 students aged 6 to 12 years old. It was established in 1958. In both 2009 and 2010, Iceland's songs were wonderful productions, and as they won the competition in 2010, they go into 2011 defending their title. Can they win again?

Back for the 3rd year, the Latvian school, Jelgava Primary, has 600 pupils aged from 5-16 and has 15 nationalities. A truly international school! In 2009, they finished 12th in Schoolovision, with the lovely Russian song, "Barinya". It was a colourful video, with the children in national dress. Then, in 2010, they again sung in Russian, with their version of "The Flying Swings."

Both songs were very well received by the co-ordinator's children and Russian wife! Will we see them sing in Russian again in 2011?

Project history

Schoolovision is now into its 3rd year, having been created early in 2009, as an idea to link primary schools from across Europe using the eTwinning platform in a project based on the Eurovision Song Contest.

Each participating country has the chance to choose a song, sing it and video it, before uploading it to the blog by the cut-off date, usually around 1 week before the real ESC. Then, all the pupils in all the participating countries watch and evaluate all the songs, before voting for their own personal favourite, usually the day before the real ESC. For this extra special live vote, we use the webcam conferencing tool, FlashMeeting.

Schoolovision 2009! was the first year of the competition, with a total of 30 countries taking part. The winners were ZS Husova school from Brno in the Czech Republic, with their beautiful song Hejkal.

In 2010, we had a larger entry, with 34 countries eager to win Schoolovision 2010! The standards were extremely high, and the winning song in a nailbiting live-vote came from Flataskoli Gardabaer in Iceland. Their entry was this fantastic version of Abba's Dancing Queen.
